Today was different than it normally is on Sundays. I went to church, but we didn’t have our usual after church dinner. The kids all had other places they wanted or needed to be. It’s kind of a bittersweet proposition, because on the one hand, I was able to get some things done around the house, but it just seemed so……quiet, you know? There are days that I don’t do so well with this empty nest thing. If you’re a mom who’s children have flown the coup, you know what I’m talking about. We spend so many years nurturing, loving and grooming our children for life on their own, because we want them to get out there and be successful and live their own lives. But, I gotta tell ya…..I miss all that noise and chaos sometimes. I’m almost embarrassed to say that some days, I just break down and cry and feel really empty. Today was one of those days. It didn’t last all day, but I did have a few moments. This house seems cavernous to me at times.
But, I am practical and I know that while I’m waiting for God to open the next door, I must praise Him in the hallway.
When I first moved into this house, I washed down the insides of most of the kitchen cupboards….namely the ones where the dishes would rest, but I hadn’t finished them all. I needed to busy myself, so I scrubbed down the one by the stove where I keep all of my spices, oils and what-not. It was a shot in the arm for me…as silly as that might sound, but I do get pleasure out of having things clean and organized.
I was trying to count my blessings today as well and while I’m not sure that God had anything to do with it, I went to Kmart on Friday evening (got off work early-Cha-Ching another blessing) and what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a good sized bag of bottle brush trees for only $11.99!! I bought 3 bags!
I like to just set them about the house in groupings. Just plain.
I have also become obsessed with chalkboard art and my head has been swimming with holiday and seasonal ideas that I can change out around the house throughout the year. You can get these black document frames at the dollar store for….well…..a dollar! Affordable enough to have a couple dozen, wouldn’t you say? ::smile::
I grabbed up a few of these picks at the dollar store as well, not really having a plan in mind, but they were a good deal and I know I could use them somewhere and I think this somewhere looks so cute! Tucked right into grandpa Pappy’s “fiddle”.
So, all of this helps brighten my spirits and I’m also planning my trip to Cabo for my son’s wedding in April. I’m pretty excited about that, as I’ve never been to Mexico.
Hope you all had a lovely weekend!
